Daniel jumps the Comic Book Time Machine to 1975, avoiding all time paradoxes, and grabs an issue of First Issue Special #5 featuring the origin of Manhunter Mark Shaw as written and penciled by Jack Kirby.

Daniel discusses the story, who is Mark Shaw, John Ostrander and Kim Yale’s influence on the Manhunter story, and why he loves Mark Shaw…and the dangers of time traveling to 1975!

A “marvelesque” DC hero? I might have to check out the Manhunter. I will skip Kirby, though, as, I fear, I am not a fan of his artwork.

Also, apparently Count Dante never ran into Frank Dux… that would have been a battle for the ages. (to hear them tell it)

Enjoyed the episode! I collected all of Manhunter when it came out. I had no idea Mark Shaw was a creation of Kirby and had appeared so early. Looking forward to future episodes!

The great news is Ostrander and Yale make sure you never had to read Kirby’s origin story to understand what is happening.

This story, like the Atlas story, was Kirby being very entertaining. I have the Atlas issue, don’t have the Manhunter issue, but Kirby was able to give both books just the right touch. Jack threw off story ideas as nartlauly as breathing. I need to find the Manhunter issue somewhere, First Issue Special had some great Kirby one-offs, like the above mentioned characters and the Dingbats too. Allen Smith
