Ben takes a look at two comic books intended for grocery store customers to purchase. One is clearly aimed at potential collectors and the other is clearly aimed at getting parents to purchase for young potential collectors. One features Spider-Man while the other features Wonder Woman and Batman.

Hmm… I buy my comics at mycomicshop.com so of course I don’t ‘shop’ the local Wal-Mart. Thanks for mentioning this! I’ll have to check out that Showcase! Might be a good addition to the collection! I read some Rebirth – Green Lanterns and Flash (plus the two Batman “button” crossover issues) – but would like to ‘keep up’ with the rest of it. 🙂

I came across the DC Showcase Magazine just the other day at my local Walmart; I was looking it up online to see if there was any info about it, came across your podcast, and have greatly enjoyed the listen. Of the two mags talked about today, I definitely enjoyed Marvel Comics Digest a good degree more than DC Showcase, mostly for the same reasons you discussed. A series of compelling single stories delivers more bang for the buck than a bunch of random cliffhangers with little context to the casual/lapsed reader (I do try to keep up with storyline developments, but a “story so far” page would have been nice for these tales). Interesting that you said Showcase felt like a Wizard magazine project, because according to my cursory research, this was put together by a former Wizard editor; in fact, it might have risen from the ashes of a similar DC mag from earlier in 2017 called “Direct Currents,” which had similar content but was likely intended to be more of a preview for upcoming events rather than a generic cash grab like this turned out to be.
